Safari on IOS 8 – Hit or Miss With Windows Authentication

hJust when I thought web browsers could be a “personal choice” and not need dictated by the CTO, Apple went and broke Safari. And apparently this isn’t the first time. According to my research – when Apple upgraded to IOS 7, Safari stopped working with windows authenticated sites then. Welcome to today and deja vu! When attempting to access a windows authenticated site using Safari on IOS 8, you are likely to see a repeated pop up request for login credentials and eventually end up with the “blank white screen”.

So what’s this mean to all the credit union CIO’s out there supporting their board and leadership teams with iPads and iPhones? Many are sharing that their users can no longer access their corporate intranets and SharePoint sites. At Ongoing Operations, we are experiencing this firsthand ourselves. With thousands of users on our CURecover (DR/BCP) application, it is common for access to be via Apple products.  So what do you do?

OGO Remedies:

  • When IOS 8 came out, we were intermittently successful in bringing users back online by simply clearing the cache.
  • Chrome – Chrome works and is free. Because the Safari issue does not have a quick resolution, we are recommending our CURecover users download Chrome from the iTunes Store. CU CTO’s can provide added information regarding enhanced security using Chrome.
  • Use 3rd party application – SharePlus is a great little tool that gives an “app” like experience to mobile CURecover access.
  • If you’re all windows operationally (desktop/server) , consider windows based mobile devices.

All in all – Chrome provides the most stable and consistent end user experience. In terms of installing, most iPhone/iPad users are experienced in downloading apps to their device and can quickly install/configure.
